Has your credit card been swiped?

Has your credit card been swiped?
By Linda Landry (c) 2003
What do you think happens to your credit card the
minute you turn it over to make a purchase? You
know. It gets SWIPED! Now that is a scary thought
cuz when someone swiped something out of your gym
locker in school, it meant something was stolen.
Did you ever think about the fact that when your card
is SWIPED all your personal information is being stamped
on to the receipt. There are two copies, one for you and
one for the shopkeeper. A record of the transaction; in
print! Easy for some unscrupulous person to lift. Not a
secure transaction by any means.
Utilizing a credit card to make an online transaction has a
bad rap for being unsecured. Despite secure servers, the
thought of providing your personal information in detail feels
risky. Yet we do it daily in our person to person transactions.
The information lies around in a cash register drawer for all
who have access to see. Why then are we so paranoid about
online transactions? What is the alternative? Paypal, Stormpay?
Your banking information still has to be provided.
Best advice is to utilize one credit card for your online transactions.
Keep track of your activity and compare with your bank frequently
to ease your mind. Most banks have online or telephonic access
for tracking activity. Compare your chronological log with your
monthly statement upon it's receipt. Question any unusual
activitiy. Laugh if it is something you forgot to chrono. Be
concerned if it is not and get to the bottom of it quickly to get
it resolved. Relax. Go about and conduct your business as usual.
