Health - Athletes Foot Basics

Suffering from Athletes Foot

Many of us have experienced the burning itching sensation caused by athlete's foot. For many people that work out in gyms, use public showers, are active in sports or have problems with sweaty feet athletes foot is a part of life. Here is some more useful information:

What is athlete's foot? Athlete's foot is a common disorder caused by fungus that usually affects the skin between the toes. This fungus actually multiplies easily in a warm and damp area. Because many athletes use gyms and public showers they are more prone to this condition, hence the name.

Symptoms of athletes foot are dry skin, itching, inflammation, and in some cases blistering. These conditions can all be present or only one or two present on the persons foot. Athletes foot can easily spread to other parts of the body such as the groin are and under the arms. The fungus can persist for long periods of time.

A common remedy and treatment is a fungal cream. This cream is applied directly to the outbreak and kills the fungus usually taking a few weeks. There are also oral medications available.

It is advisable to keep your feet away from dampness by using foot powder and changing your shoes regularly. If the problem persists it is advisable to contact a podiatrist for consultation.
