The flu is a virus that spreads from person to person usually around December to March. Millions of people catch the flu each year which usually lasts a few days. Most people are sick for this time, a few get extremely sick and usually require hospitalization.

There are a few practical things to do to avoid the flu. First of all get a flu shot. A flu shot will help you by being vaccinated by this year's flu virus. Most people that receive a flu shot make it unscathed throughout the year without catching the flu. Make sure that you wash your hands regularly with soap and water. The flu usually spreads by hand to mouth contact so keep your hands clean.

If you catch the flu then drink lots of liquids. Your body is working hard so make sure that you are drinking liquids and staying hydrated. There are also medications on the market that can help you combat the flu such as Tamiflu and Zicam. If you are sick with the flu it is also advisable to consult with a physician. So this year follow these tips and ward off the flu.
