"How To Make Time For a Home Based Business While Keeping Your Day Job"

There are thousands of you out there who are contemplating the idea of running your own home based business.
I hold a day job as a Press Operator at one of the "Big 3" automotive plants which takes up a large portion of my day. As I started my marketing company, I noticed right away that it had a huge impact on the amount of free time I used to enjoy during the evening.
The question that begs to be answered then, is how do you make time for the business, hold on to your day job for security and keep your family happy? I approached the problem using the W5 problem solving tool!! W5 stands for Who, What, Where, When and Why.
I'll start with WHO. This question needs to read; Who do you work around? Are you constantly dealing with interruptions? Does the family pet circle your feet and break your concentration? How about noise from another room? Even e-mail can be a regular distraction that robs you of the valuable time you have set aside for your future success.
Start by creating a great mental environment within which you are able to do business. You need to do two things to accomplish what I call 'Mental Sanctuary'.
First, you need to be ready to commit mentally to this new business venture. You need to know where you are coming from.
Secondly, you need to create the proper partitions within your home. This isn't about building physical walls within your home. It's about being able to communicate to yourself and the members of your family. They need to understand that you are going to require a higher level of respect when it comes to interruptions.
WHAT you work on is the next area that we will discuss. This question deals with schedule and routine. Operating a business requires a certain amount of discipline. You may not want to hear that!! It's true though and we all need to accept it. Discipline means building your business schedule into the schedule of your life.
Put up a two month 'at a glance' type calendar on the refrigerator that allows you to plan both the business needs and the family needs at the same time in the same place. This eliminates the problem of double booking.
Other tools that you have to have in your arsenal are To Do Lists and the Next Day Plan. Everyone knows what a To Do List is all about but how many plan for the next day at the end of the current day.
WHERE you do your work is an important aspect of how much time you require to do your work. Lighting, ergonomics, tools at hand, interruptions and even proximity to the refrigerator all have an influence on how productive you are when actually working.
WHEN you work is one of the most important aspects of success in the home business arena. From the beginning there has to be family buy in when it comes to work schedule. You will have to negotiate with the other members of the family for the time that you require for your business. Pick the optimum time of the day for the type of person you are. There is no sense in booking morning time if you can't get out of bed.
One Cardinal Rule that should never be broken is this: Always eat your meals with your family!!! Nothing leads to the disintegration of the family and ultimately your business faster than braking this rule.
WHY you need to change your habits is an interesting question. Poor habits are usually the downfall of a new business venture. Successful people are almost always disciplined in some aspect of their lives and that translates back into business success.
It isn't that hard to change if you make a firm decision to do it. Trial, Implement, Communicate and Validate!! Use these tools to become a Successful Home Based Business Entrepreneur.
