Finding Affordable Health Insurance

With prices seeming to be on a never-ending rise, health insurance costs have increased to the point that affordable health insurance seems to be a thing of the past. One of the most common means of obtaining affordable health insurance is working for a company that offers a group health insurance. But what about those of us who don't work for a company with insurance benefits, those who have lost their jobs or are in between, those who are uninsured and under-insured ?

The first thing to do when looking for affordable health insurance is to assess your personal situation. Not all people need the same benefits in an insurance policy. Someone who has a family will need a different policy than a single person, and, even though a company offers a family group policy, their group policy might not meet the needs of your particular family situation. You must look at your needs before starting to shop for affordable health insurance, and, then, shop around. Pay strict attention to the cost of the benefits that are important to you, the yearly deductibles, co-pays, ceilings, and lifetime maximums that might adversely affect you. For instance, some may need a policy that covers maternity, but if you don't need it, delete that from your list of necessary coverage. Look at a minimum of 8 to 10 companies and keep looking until you find an affordable health insurance that fits your needs.

If you are low income, be sure to first look for affordable health insurance with your state's Medicaid program. Every state has a family services assistance program that you might qualify for. These programs can cover doctor visits, eye care, dental work, emergency rooms, and prescriptions; they offer the most affordable health insurance available and are generally sufficient in coverage to fully protect your family. If you qualify for this assistance, it's free or at a very low cost to you, so it's worth a trip to the office that handles family services for your area and filling out an application.

However, if you don't qualify for assistance, the best place to look for affordable health insurance is on the internet. Because of the amount of competition on the internet and the fact that no agent receives a commission, you will find considerably lower prices along with other benefits of doing business online. All the top insurance companies are online, too, offering affordable health insurance and competing for your business. When doing business online, however, just be sure to verify that the company you choose is licensed in your state before making your final choice.

There are two major keys to finding affordable health insurance. The first one is realizing that insurance is to protect you from a major financial loss, not to defray the everyday expenses of health care. Paying the costs of office visits, medicines, and check-ups will help you keep your health insurance affordable. And the second key to affordable health insurance is to shop around and compare.
