Use Winter To Fuel Weight Loss

If you live in a cold weather spot, you should take advantage of every season to increase your fitness levels and get into better physical conditioning.

Winter can be a particular challenge because most people tend to want to "hibernate" when it gets dark early and it's snowy and cold. That is understandable, but there are a lot of great winter sports and activities that are fun and burn calories. This will add variety and spice to your regular work out routine, and burn a few extra calories.

Here are some great ways to have fun in the snow.

Sledding. Not really a winter sport, but is a very good cardio workout after you've walked up a hill in snowgear a few dozen times. This is a great way to spend family time if you have kids or just want to be a big kid yourself.

Skiing. Cross Country and Downhill skiing are both great ways to work out your entire body. Especially your legs. If you are new to skiing, you may want to consider cross country or taking a few lessons if you decide to go ownhill. Most ski lodges and resorts have trained professionals that will work with you on smaller hills, known as "bunny hills", teaching you how to control the skiis with your feet and legs. You won't have to spend a ton on equipment to try it because many of these places offer ski rental. Skiing can burn hundreds of calories an hour, and you'll be ready to relax at the end of the day.

Snowshoeing. This is similiar to cross country skiing, but instead of wearing a ski to glide through snow, you use a special shoe that distributes your body weight so you don't sink in. Traditionally these are made of hardwood and leather straps, attached to the foot. You also use poles to help keep your balance and make your way through the snow. This is a very mild way to enjoy the winter without risking injury.

Tobagganing. This is a real challenge if you have to carry the tobaggan. They are heavy and require at least 2 people to carry one.

A good old fashioned snowball fight. Nothing like running, ducking and diving from flying balls of snow!

Before getting involved in any winter sport, you'll need to gear up. Chances are you have most of these things already. You'll need a hat, gloves or mittens, and a scarf. You may want to consider investing in a snowsuit or wear layers to protect against the wind and cold.

Sunglasses or protective eyewear are a great idea, too.

Applying lotion will help prevent dry skin, and lip protection will guard against chapped lips.

Don't let another winter get behind you without having some fun!
